   Writing Retreats For NBC Candidates

In response to requests from teachers across NYS who are current National Board candidates, Take One, or Advanced Candidates this retreat was created to give time to their own writing in a collegial environment. Working independently, with partners, or in writing groups on portfolio entries, candidates have the opportunity to write, read, review and reflect in congenial and supportive surroundings. The community of writers and reviewers supports the development of portfolio entries and the peer review of video tapes of classroom teaching. Recognizing that candidates need time for intellectual stimulation, for reading and writing and to exchange feedback with colleagues from diverse schools, the writing retreat helps teachers exchange ideas and respond to one another’s works. This group gathering is unlike other retreats because candidates have the chance to discuss and listen to issues particular to their unique work, as their work is unfolding. Join your colleagues for thoughtful and reflective discussion about National Board Certification in a collegial setting. Fee: $99. This fee is partially underwritten by State Farm Insurance Company. This program is open only to NBC Candidates, THNI Candidates, and Advanced Candidates.

National Board Facilitators Institute: Candidate Support Providers Training
A FOUNDATION FOR CANDIDATE SUPPORT The Greater Capital Region Teacher Center is pleased to host the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Candidate Support Providers Training. This institute is designed and presented by staff from the NBPTS to provide Candidate Support Providers or Facilitators the foundations necessary to help candidates through the rigorous process by forming Support Groups. Currently in NYS there are over 600 National Board Certified Teachers. As those numbers increase, and more and more teachers learn about National Board Certification, the requests for assistance in undertaking the rigorous process of the National Board have also increased statewide. This institute is an opportunity to share experience and knowledge with colleagues who are interested in establishing National Board Certification Support Groups. This seminar will explore the formation and rationale of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, examine the skill sets that underpin the process of the National Board, and provide a platform for understanding what is “accomplished teaching.” Discussion will include pre-candidacy support in a district, a critical component for preparing teachers seeking NBC and supporting them in the process. Time-lines, and writing activities which help guide candidates through the process will be shared. Establishing support groups, developing norms and supporting a culture for a community of learners will also be explored. DEBUNKING THE MYTHS * What are the common misconceptions about the NBPTS assessment program? PROVIDING SUPPORT PROVIDERS WITH A FOUNDATION * What does every candidate support provider need to know? FOCUSING CANDIDATES ON WHAT MATTERS MOST * How can candidate support providers elevate candidate focus to what really matters?
