About the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center

The Greater Capital Region Teacher Center has, since 1984, provided professional development programs and opportunities for educators in over 96 schools districts in a 14 county region encompassing 9,000 square miles. Improving professional learning for educators is a crucial step in transforming schools and improving academic achievement.

Teacher professional development and educator support have a powerful impact on instruction, school culture, and student outcomes. The Teacher Center provides a multitude of learning opportunities through partnerships with institutions of higher education, NYS agencies, BOCES, NYSUT, CASDA, business, and research organizations. The Teacher Center has developed significant areas of expertise in professional learning and designs highly effective ways of collaborating with education partners to support teachers throughout the learning continuum – from learner to leader.

 

With this in mind, The Greater Capital Region Teacher Center implements programs that specifically target the important components of professional development for school improvement as identified by numerous research studies and policy advocates:

improving teacher quality, mastering academic content knowledge, and sustaining teacher-development practices. These programs result in long-term regional resources fulfilling the needs of many educators for powerful professional learning. GCRTC programs and collaborative partner programs:

  • Provide linkage between external and internal teacher-driven professional development programs in targeted areas that support federal and state education reform initiatives

  • Establish high quality program learning outcomes and which indicate evidence and benchmarks for teacher content knowledge, student learning outcomes and systemic change in schools.
  • Create and sustain informed opinion by building a knowledge base from research study, policy review, and examination of elements of education reform.

 

 

 

The Greater Capital Region Teacher Center, since 1984, is part of a large-scale initiative that provides NYS Legislative funding to update and improve teachers' skills and knowledge in priority areas. The Teacher Center promotes professional development for teachers, by teachers and supports professional learning activities under agreements with district superintendents and union leaders. Efforts address national and state needs, identify and promote best practice, support the development and dissemination of professional learning resources in priority areas, and develop professional networks for teachers. Initiatives are tailored to address local needs and merges internal school-based learning with external practitioners through conferences, workshops, study groups, on-line or digital media.

There are more than 130 Centers in seven regional networks throughout New York State.
Teacher Centers work with more than 685 public school districts and more than 1,000 non-public and charter schools.

New York State Teacher Centers deliver professional development to support quality teaching for more than 300,000 educators in their communities.

Color Poster Printer: Need to make a poster for your classroom? Introducing the all new EPSON STYLUS PRO 7900 photographic ink jet poster printer. This printer is capable of handling virtually any media type, in a roll or cut sheet up to 24” W x 36” L. If you have an image, place it on a thumb drive and or CD. The printer software supports Windows Vista, XP (32 / 64 bit) and Macintosh OSX 10.4.9 or higher. Send a word document layout 81/2 x 11, or Microsoft Publisher attachment and the Teacher Center will create your colored poster, or contact the Teacher Center at (518) 525-2657 for availability. Laminator: Wondering how to make classroom material last? Let us help protect, preserve and enhance all of your frequently used documents, posters, cut-outs, and other projects up to 27” wide with our heat sealed laminator.
